Welcome to NSU!
And there’s more welcoming to come. Over the next 15 days, NSU will welcome news students again and again — and again.
Weeks of Welcome, organized by the Office of First Year and Transitional Programs, includes 18 events and will run until Sept. 7.
Susana Placencia, junior athletic training major and Orientation Leader said, “We want everyone to mix and mingle because we know it’s a hard transition to make and it is harsh to have to make friends all over again.”
On Aug. 23, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., students who wear NSU apparel to the north entrance of the Don Taft University Center (near the library) will receive free smoothies from JuiceBlendz. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., student scan play video games on multiple big big screen TVs in the UC Pits.
On Aug. 23, at 9 p.m., the Frangela Duo comedian act will perform in the Black Box Theater.
On Aug. 25, instead of eating lunch inside the UC, grab a blanket and a new friend and have a South Florida picnic on the Quad, with free food. Then work off the lunch at the GymCrazyum sports obstacle course between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. in the RecPlex.
CAUSEFest on the 26th will provide students with an opportunity to have a field day and help the community by donating one dollar to the purchase of a home for a family in New Orleans. That day, new students also meet all the academic societies in the lobby of the Parker Building
at noon.
During Sharkapalooza on Aug. 27, all the clubs and organizations on campus will have a booth in the UC. There will be free food, music and games. Several prizes including the grand prize — a trip for two anywhere in the continental U.S. plus a $200 Visa gift card and a free stay in a hotel — will be raffled.
However, the welcoming does not end there. On Saturday, Aug. 28 at 8 p.m., SGA will host Welcome Back Waterworks, which includes two waterslides, two foam pits, bungee basketball, a dunk tank and a DJ.
On Sept. 6, a Labor Day Pool Party will be held at noon by the RecPlex pool.
On Sept. 7, from noon to 1 p.m. students can learn how to manage their time in the first Tools for Success seminar, sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Student Success, in the Rosenthal Student Center, Room 200.
The Weeks of Welcome culminate with the Under-graduate Convocation, an annual ceremony that intro-duces the theme for the college. Edwidge Danticat, author of “The Farming of Bones” will speak at 4 p.m. in the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center.
Let the welcoming begin!
