You know Creed. You’ve heard “With Arms Wide Open,” (and if you haven’t, then you should) which catapulted the band to biggest-band-in-the-world status in the early 2000s. But do you know
Scott Stapp?
Scott Stapp is the lead singer of Creed, the band who sold more than 40 million albums, but dismantled in 2004. In 2005, Stapp released a solo album called “The Great Divide.” He, then, recorded a song with Carlos Santana and worked with The Doors. Creed reunited in 2009. Although according to ScottStappofficial.com, Stapp already recorded songs for a second solo album. Creed’s first album after their reunion, “Full circle,” was released in 2009 The band just completed their 2010 Tour, in September. Scott Stapp performed at Revolution Live on Sept. 28.
Before his performance he called in to NSU’s RadioX and spoke to The Current.
How does it feel to be back?
“We had a show in Palm Beach and it was awesome. It was a great homecoming. I love playing in my home state. I lived here until I was 20 years old.”
Do you get to go to your old hangouts?
“My life consists of two 12 year old boys, my nephew and son, my daughter, and my wife. We’re always on the move. My life outside of music is my family. I always prefer going to a baseball game with my kids. My family goes on tour with me.”
You just toured with your band and as a single artist. Do the tours overlap? How do you handle that?
“It’s what I love to do; play music, write, create and record. I have a studio at home and my son plays guitar and my wife plays the tambourine. It’s a team effort. We’re all involved. I couldn’t do it without my CEO, my wife. We’re Bonnie and Clyde. She’s my partner. Like my assistant with benefits. I strive to be like my wife.”
How is it to be back with your band?
“It’s very healing to be reunited. It’s a chance to reflect; have fun and hang out.”
What’s it like to play with Santana on his new album?
“It was a blessing. I’m humbled that he even asked. It’s an answer of prayer. It will have a residual impact in my life and career forever.”
Your favorite musician is Jim Morrison. Why?
“I like the way he approached his lyric writing, I like his approach to lyric writing along with Bono. In studying The Doors and learning about them, Jim looked at lyrics as a piece of art and body within themselves. It taught me. I try to write it in a way to stand alone. Helped me figure out that I could transition experiences into songs. His writing influenced me most.”
What is your favorite song from The Doors?
“It depends on the mood. I couldn’t pick one. A few are ‘Light My Fire,’ ‘Roadhouse Blues’ and ‘Riders on The Storm.’”
