NSU honors FDA

Last week, the College of Phar-macy awarded the Stephanie F. Aleong, J.D., National Patient Safety Award to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. NSU gives the award to individuals or organizations who improve patient safety. The award cere-mony attracted more than 500 pharmacists. Capt. Denise Toyer of the FDA’s Office of Surveil-lance and Epidemiology accepted the award on behalf of the organization.

Submit your creative pieces to Digressions

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences’ literary magazine will accept student submissions through Jan. 24. Students may submit poems, short stories, photographs, paintings or any form of art. For more information contact Sue Tempow, managing editor, at tenpow@nova.edu.

Gov. Crist appoints NSU director to the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council

Gov. Charlie Crist appointed Susan Kabot, Ed.D., director of Clinical and Therapeutic Programs at the Mailman Segal Institute, to the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council. The council works to provide support with people with disabilities providing planning and funding research. At MSI, Kabot worked with autistic children and researched the disorder.

College of Dental Medicine receives grant

The American Association of Endodontists Foundation awarded the College of Dental Medicine $100,000 to establish an endowed professorship in endodontics. The college needed $400,000 to establish the professorship and this grant raised the program’s funds to $500,000.

Disney gets a makeover

Walt Disney World in Central Florida is changing “Pleasure Island” in Downtown Disney to “Hyperion Wharf.” The new section will include stores, restaurants, a lakeside park and walkways. The project is estimated to produce more than 1,200 jobs over the next three years.

Bill Clinton to make cameo in “Hangover 2”

The 42nd president, Bill Clinton, will appear in the sequel to the 2009 film. The sequel, to be released next year, was mostly filmed in Miami and Bangkok. The president shot his scene in Bangkok. Clinton played himself.

Facebook introduces messaging system

Two weeks ago, Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerburg, announced the release of a messaging system that will integrate instant messaging, Short Messaging System and Facebook e-mail. Zuckerburg said the program would do this by sending an e-mail as an instant message if the receiver was online or a text message, if the receiver prefers. The new system would keep only one thread of all the conversations two users have over time. He also said that the program would be released by invitation only over the next few months.
