Getting use out of Twitter

It’s hard to make the case that Twitter has done anything good for society. Regardless, Twitter is a part of our lives now. Even if you’re not on it, you hear about it every day. For those who are on it or are thinking about taking the leap into the Twittersphere, here are a few Twitterers worth following.

Twitter is actually a good place to get the latest news, scores or event info. You definitely want to follow CNN Breaking News (@cnnbrk) or The New York Times (@nytimes). For sports nuts, you can check in on the latest news or scores from ESPN (@espn).

If you need your funny bone tickled, check out The Onion (@theonion) for hilarious fake news. There are also tons of comedians like Chelsea Handler (@chelseahandler), Jimmy Fallon (@jimmyfallon), Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow), and Joel McHale (@joelmchale). Unintentionally funny people include Kim Kardashian (@KimKardashian), Shaquille O’Neal (@The_Real_Shaq) and, of course, Charlie Sheen (@charliesheen).

There are also inspirational people you could follow who often post many nuggets of wisdom. These include Tony Robbins (@tonyrobbins), Dr. Drew (@drdrew), his Holiness the Dalai Lama (@dalailama) and Hugh Hefner (@hughhefner).

Finally, make Twitter work to your advantage by giving you deals and discounts on awesome stuff. Check out airlines (@jetblue, @southwestair), cruise lines (@carnivalcruise) or travel sites (@orbitz) for all of their latest deals or discounts. You can also follow your favorite companies like Starbucks (@starbucks) or Whole Foods (@wholefoods).

The world of Twitter is full of useless, senseless information that no one needs to know. Who in the world can explain why Lady Gaga has more than 9 million followers? However, if used correctly, one could pluck some usefulness out of Twitter. Tweet away — responsibly.
