Welcome to the Church of Consumerism, where your deepest urges to attain the latest goods can be granted solely by submitting yourself to the caring love of materialism.
Whether you are watching TV, reading a magazine, even skimming over the newspaper, consumerism is tenderly relaying our message in hopes of converting you into a zealous believer.
Faithfully practiced by most in a world where reputation is based upon possessed goods, consumerism has become the leading religion to date, accepting members of each and every ethnicity; that is, if you have the means to attain, and are able to maintain, our agenda: CONSUME.
Consumerism’s deities are big name corporations that bless us with a consistent flow of novel goods to shower ourselves in blinding bliss. How many times have we found ourselves, myself included, falling in love with something, be it an accessory, gadget, type of clothing, etc., and desiring it beyond our wildest dreams, as if it were the missing stone necessary to complete our path to eternal happiness?
Religious fervor consumes us wholly as we are struck with a feverish craving to acquire the latest 4D LED TV, praying to the almighty materialistic deities to grant us just this one wish, promising to never ask for anything else again — that is, until the latest object is advertised and we forgo the process once more.
That is the beauty of consumerism: you are allowed, in fact, it is strongly recommended that you pursue the attainment of as many goods as possible. Our message is simple: BUY, BUY, BUY!
Referring to his contemporaries more than 150 years ago, Henry David Thoreau stressed a growing concern, the fact that “[Humanity] has no time to be anything but a machine.” Since then, we have become sophisticated machines, adorned with superfluous items that enhance our evolutionary design. Time has proven itself a key ally in this metamorphosis. As the years carried on, numerous novel, materialistic objects flooded the world, drowning any shred of humanity in the depths of superficiality and transforming us into the almighty consumerists, fanatical practitioners of the new age.
