Between breaking the ankles of Senquez Golson and stiff-arming Neico Thorpe to another planet, Trent Richardson undoubtedly deserves to lift the Heisman Trophy on Dec. 10.
The Alabama running back has been a dominant force in the toughest conference in the nation, and that’s why he should win this prestigious award.
It’s one thing to put up ridiculous stats against mediocre football teams. It’s another to shine against top-level talent. Sure, Robert Griffin III and Case Keenum have destroyed opponents, but last time I checked, their schedules have been astronomically easier than Richardson’s.
Against the best team in the nation, Richardson had a total of 169 yards. His team had a total of 295 yards that game.
In just 12 games this season, Richardson has a total of 1,910 yards and 23 touchdowns. When former teammate Mark Ingram won the Heisman in 2009, he had a total of 1,192 yards and 20 touchdowns in 14 games.
Richardson is the complete package at running back. Not only does he have the speed and elusiveness that NFL scouts drool over, he relishes contact. Richardson finishes every run with authority and doesn’t understand the meaning of the word “quit.” You won’t see him pull a “Ted Ginn” and run towards the sidelines.
When you are able to be a game-changer against LSU, Auburn, Florida, Arkansas and Penn State, there is no question you deserve the Heisman Trophy.
That’s exactly what the Alabama running back has done, and that’s why you’ll be seeing him hold the Heisman Trophy. He’ll also play a key role when Alabama defeats LSU in the much anticipated rematch for the national championship.
Roll Tide.
