Coming Lacrosse New Things

Transfer student Camila Alfonso, political science and communications studies major, has accomplished something no student has in the history of NSU – the creation of an all Women’s Lacrosse intramural team.

“The main reason I even started the team was because many people have played [lacrosse] for years and when they get to Nova, there’s no opportunity for it,” Alfonso said. “I feel very accomplished. When I put my mind to something, it will happen. I just wanted to open doors and create opportunities for girls at NSU, and help the experienced players grow.”

Once everything was approved, I tabled and so there were many interested students.”

One of the team members, sophomore and biology major Geralyn T. expressed her excitement over the team’s creation.

She said, “I played all throughout high school and was bummed to not be able to in college, but I’m so glad it’s been made.”

Lacrosse, Canada’s national sport is usually played in U.S. Ivy League schools. But in recent years, the excitement and beneficial workout from playing lacrosse has exploded and is now the fastest growing sport in the country. With years of basketball, soccer, lacrosse and coaching experience under her belt, Alfonso is ready to dive in with more than 70 women (and dozens of men!) who all share a devotion to the “fastest sport on two feet” according to Alfonso. Because she found a group of interested men, she devoted to help create a men’s division as well.

In her first introductory meeting on Sept. 6, Alfonso stressed that no experience is needed because she wants to welcome anyone interested in lacrosse. Her primary method will be to divide the girls into two teams, A and B; team A are girls with the most experience and B will consist of players new to the sport. This will be done in order to conduct effective and productive practices according to their skills. Nevertheless, Alfonso would like her new team to become a strong family so the players will ultimately train, condition, and play together. Alfonso is willing to fundraise and compile grant proposals to SGA so her girls are as equipped as possible; and the team’s meeting times will accommodate the girls’ class schedules. Alfonso’s main goal for the team is to “make the club strong enough so it turns into an official athletic team that will compete for years to come.” The girls clearly see and really appreciate how much their founder will contribute to the team. Practice will be at NSU’s soccer field by the Commons residence hall on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m.

The newly founded team is very excited to have made NSU history! Alfonso said, “I hope to leave a legacy and encourage everyone that anything is possible. I just love leaving a positive mark everywhere I go.” All eyes are on NSU’s brand new Women’s Lacrosse team — watch closely, they’re fast!
