Shepard Broad to gather experts on veterans’ PTSD

NSU’s Shepard Broad Law Center will host a national symposium on Feb. 1 titled “Wounds of War: Meeting the Needs of Active-Duty Military Personnel and Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder,” from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

This free symposium will bring together a variety of experts to discuss the rising of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among active military personnel and veterans as they return home.

NSU student veteran Chris Mignocchi, junior exercise science major, said, “I think the availability of care and treatment is what needs to be accessible. Veterans are coming back and they are reintegrating with civilian life by going to school and work. Those are the places where awareness and treatment needs to be addressed.”

Attendees will include professionals in the legal, mental health, education, and medical fields. Law students, will hear from expert panels focusing on issues surrounding PTSD in the military

There will be several topics discussed at the symposium, on PTSD, its frequency in the military, and its treatment; PTSD’s societal impact; what the legal professions say about the prevalence of PTSD in the military; and solutions to address PTSD.

Angel Medina, a veteran who will attend the seminar, said, “When I received the draft schedule, I was pleasantly surprised that such topics would be discussed. This will certainly benefit the veteran community because when you return, it’s not something you want to announce.”

During the seminar, there will be opportunities for feedback and brainstorming.

Kelsey DeSantis, sophomore business major, is a student veteran who served in the Marines. She said, that it is great when services are offered to veterans.

“Providing help and raising awareness about PTSD bring comfort to student veterans. Holding events like these and providing services is like therapy; it allows us to have someone to talk to.” DeSantis said.

This symposium was approved by the Florida Bar for 6.0 CLE hours of general credit for Florida attorneys. To earn CLE credit, students must pre-register online and pay the $45 fee by Jan. 31. For more information, call (954) 262-6111.
