What game do you play?

As more people buy smartphones, game apps continue to sweep the nation. Whether you’d like to challenge yourself, procrastinate on school work or simply pass the time, it’s nearly impossible to resist playing a smartphone game. Here are some of the best, must-play game apps.

Candy Crush

The app that has everybody talking is Candy Crush Saga, played by people of all ages. Anyone with a smartphone knows that Candy Crush is nearly impossible to escape, as ads for it pop up on practically every mobile website.

This game is terribly addicting. The levels become progressively harder, constantly challenging you. As soon as you finish one level, you have this sudden urge to make it to the next one.

The concept of the game is simple: to score points, swipe the candied fruit in any direction to get three or more of the same fruit in a row. At the beginning of each level, there’s a set amount of points you must earn within a number of turns. Each level has boosters to give you extra points. The challenge of these boosters is that obtaining them can be quite difficult, causing you to want to play even more.

Though the game is free, you can buy boosters that help you beat tough levels. Before you know it, you look at the clock to realize that you have been playing Candy Crush for a good three or four hours, have spent money on unnecessary boosters, and still have yet to do your homework. You won’t be able to stop playing this fun game, so be careful and don’t let the urge to move to the next level consume your time.

Angry Birds

Angry Birds has become so popular that you can buy Angry Birds appliances, apparel, books, costumes and more. There are multiple free and paid Angry Birds games, including Angry Birds Star Wars, Angry Birds Season and Angry Birds Rio.

The game pits birds against pigs. In each level, you launch birds with a slingshot to knock down a tower of pigs. You must destroy all the pigs in order to win each level. Levels have different types of birds with different abilities, including birds that split off into three separate birds to increase the chances of hitting more pigs. If you are unable to knock down and destroy all the pigs before you run out of birds, you are forced to play the level until you win.

This game can be aggravating at times, especially because, when you lose the level, the pigs mock you with laughter. It also challenges your mind as you must get the arch just right and hit the pigs in just the right spot for a majority of them to fall. It is a great way to pass the time, and the perfect game to set your niece or nephew down with when you’re forced to babysit.

Plague

Plague may be a bit morbid, but it’s also incredibly fun. It is not the most popular game out there, but it is a great strategy game for those who like a challenge. The app is $1.99, but compared to pricey computer or board games, is completely worth it.

The goal of the game is to infect the world with the most deadly disease possible until the entire world dies off. You start out by making your disease and deciding where you want the infection to start first. You can either make your disease so deadly that it destroys civilizations quickly, or you can have it slowly go unnoticed by the population.

There are ups and downs to both strategies. If you start the disease off strong, it will not spread easily, but if you start it off too slow, then cures are easier to make for it. Where you start the disease is also a factor. I like to start the disease slow and in third world countries; this makes it easier to spread, while going unnoticed.

When the entire world is infected, I make the disease strong enough to take out the entire population. This strategy depends greatly on timing. If you go too soon, then people notice and cut off ways to keep the disease from spreading, which also gives them time to make a cure. If you start too late, then a cure for your disease has already started, making it nearly impossible to destroy the entire population.

Though the concept of the game is rather morbid, it is extremely fun if you enjoy strategizing and thinking about your next few moves and their consequences.

If you have yet to try these apps, grab your phone and get ready to get sucked in.
