Start the new year with a service trip

NSU’s Student Leadership and Civic Engagement will hold their first service trip of the semester to Tampa on Jan. 16 to 18.

All participants will be split into two groups to work toward two different social issues: homelessness and hunger. Half of the participants will be working with Habitat for Humanity to assist in building a home and half with Feeding America to help feed people in need.

Graduate Assistant for Civic Engagement Tara Scagliarini said the service trip allows a group of like-minded students to work on a specific social issue.

“The trip is a perfect time to get away from campus for a weekend to do good for the community,” she said.

Christian Hernandez, the student site leader for the trip, said he is devoted to helping others and making an impact in his community.

“I’m excited to work with other students in this trip to make a difference in other people’s lives. I want this trip to be full of great memories and experiences that will last a life time,” he said.

Leading up to the service trip, participants will be stopping at the NSU regional campus in Tampa for a meet and greet dinner.

Scagliarini said, “The dinner allows the main campus and regional students who will be volunteering together, get to know one another first.”

On the last day of the trip, students will be spending the day at Busch Gardens. The cost of the trip is $140, which includes lodging, transportation and the ticket to Busch Gardens.

The bus will leave on Jan. 16 at 3 p.m. from the Shark Circle.
Students can sign up on SLCE’s OrgSync page at orgsync.com/45785/forms/52252. The deadline to sign up for the service trip is Jan. 14 at 11:59 p.m.

Participants will be staying at the Cedarkirk Camp & Conference Center. For more information, contact Scagliarini at ts1371@nova.edu or 954-262-7297.
