NSU celebrates Hispanic Heritage Celebration

Nova Southeastern University kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month on Sunday, Sept. 6 with the annual Argentine film festival and opening reception of “Diversity in Art.”

The celebration started with the premiere of “The Mural,” an Argentine film about romance at the Don Taft University Center. Over 150 people attended.

Adriana Bianco, actress, journalist and moderator of the night’s event said, “I want people after watching ‘The Mural’ to know that there’s no age for love.”

The month long festivities will showcase a film festival sponsored by the Alvin Sherman Library (ALS), which will highlight four movies from the Argentine culture.

Bianco said, “Art opens your mind, opens your emotions, opens your eyes and opens your reflection.”

Lydia Acosta, vice president for information services and an NSU librarian, was excited about the continuation of this four-year-long collaboration with Bianco for the Hispanic heritage celebration at NSU.

The Adolfo & Marisela Cotilla Gallery located on the second floor of the ASL featured seven Argentine and Puerto Rican artists in a “Diversity in Art” show.

Samuel Navedo, visual artist, said, “It’s great to be able to showcase my work on this platform. I am really honored to have been chosen.”

Victor Ortiz, president of the South Florida Chapter of Centro cultural De Puerto Rico, wanted guests to understand that Puerto Rico is excelling in many areas, including film.

Ortiz said, “Puerto Ricans are shining in the production of films, and this year’s film festival is proof that our work is being recognized.”

Marcelo Martin Giusto, consulate general of Argentina, also attended Sunday’s kick-off Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.

The night’s celebration ended with a rendition from Trio Classico, a Puerto Rican band.
