UCLA kicker clears 60 yard field goal

Ka’imi Fairbairn, kicker for the UCLA Bruins, nailed a 60 yard field goal while playing against the California Golden Bears on Oct. 22. Fairbairn made the field goal attempt after receiving a five yard penalty for illegal procedure on the original 55 yard kick. Fairbairn’s field goal is the longest successful kick in school history, and was the second longest field goal in Pac-12 history, according to ESPN.

Blue Jackets fire Todd Richards, hire John Tortorella

Richards was replaced by Tortorella following a 0-7-0 start for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Tortorella will coach the Blue Jackets until the 2017-18 season after signing the three-year contract. Jarmo Kekalainen, general manager of the team, said in a statement that Tortorella is experienced and has a successful track record; he has a 446-375-115 record in 936 games and was coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning when they won the 2004 Stanley Cup.

Fred Jackson crashes Corvette leaving Seahawks practice facility

Jackson, running back for the Seattle Seahawks, reportedly crashed his Corvette into multiple traffic signs outside of the Seahawks’ practice facility in Renton, Wash. According the Renton Police Department, Jackson lost control of his car and crashed into a stop sign shortly after 5pm. Jackson will fined $175 for inattentive driving. Although the Corvette was significantly damaged, Jackson was not injured and is not expected to miss any games with the Seahawks.

‘The Hulk’ retires

Australian UFC heavyweight Soa “The Hulk” Palelei, 37, has retired from competing in mixed martial arts after a 13-year career, beginning in 2002. On Twitter, the fighter said it was time for him to focus on “family and other career interests.” He has won 12 out of his last 14 fights; his overall record is 22-5, and 18 of those wins were TKOs or KOs.

ASU to add women’s lacrosse and women’s triathlon

Arizona State University will add its third NCAA sport in the past year, women’s lacrosse, and also announced that it will add women’s triathlon. The two sports will be the university’s 24th and 25th varsity sports, following the addition of men’s ice hockey. ASU’s athletic director, Ray Anderson, previously said the addition of women’s lacrosse would fulfill the school’s Title IX obligation.
