Look out for the annual emergency drill
NSU will hosts its annual university-wide emergency drill on March 17 at 11 a.m. The drill will occur on all NSU campuses, sites and facilities. Drills include emergency and fire-safety plans. There will also be a test of the mass notification system, which includes phone calls, emails and notifications over the campus speaker systems. ‘Walk in My Shoes’ at NSU
To raise awareness of sexual abuse of children, Lauren Book, a victim and survivor who has walked 500 miles from Miami to Tallahassee for the past six years, will begin the final leg of her Walk in My Shoes journey at the Alvin Sherman Library on March 26. During this leg of the walk, Book will also launch her new organization, Lauren’s Kids’ Guide to Hope and Healing, which helps families with children who are victims of sexual abuse. Student named QEP contest winner
Steven Jones, educational leadership doctoral student, won the “Name the QEP” contest with the title, “Write from the Start!” There were 317 participants in the contest. Jones received a $500 gift card to the NSU Book Store.

Discover Forensic Psychology in Miami
The College of Psychology will host Forensic Psychology Day at the Miami campus on March 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the community to learn more about forensic psychology. The free event will feature break-out sessions, including “The Mental Health Court,” by Judge Ginger Lerner-Wren, “Psychology and Risk Assessment of Future Violence,” by David Shapiro, and “Battered Women Who Kill in Self Defense” by Lenore Walker. Dive under the sea with NSU
To share the latest research with the community, NSU created the 2016 Dive-In Lecture Series, where researchers present information on marine science topics. This semester’s free lectures include “Southeast Florida Action Network – How You Can Get Involved” by Kelly Montenero on March 16 and “Romance on the Reef: When Threatened Coral Species Mate” by Nicole Fogarty on April 19. Both lectures will be at 6 p.m. at the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Center Building at John U. Lloyd State Park in Hollywood. Light refreshments will be served at the lectures. Nursing program created at Tampa campus
Beginning fall 2016, NSU’s Tampa campus will offer a Family Nurse Practitioner program with a Master of Science in Nursing degree. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for advanced practice nurses will rise by approximately 31 percent by 2024, and practitioners will earn a median salary of $102,650. The program generally takes eight semesters to complete, with the first three consisting of online-only courses and the remainder being both in-person and online.
