Come out to the Career and Internship Expo, and you might just walk out with a job.
The Office of Career Development will host the Career and Internship Expo for students and alumni to connect with employers who are hiring for full-time, part-time and internship opportunities. The expo will be Wed., Sep. 28 in the Arena at the Don Taft University Center from 4:30-7 p.m.
Over 50 companies will attend the event, and they will hand out pamphlets, provide information and talk to attendees about job or internship opportunities. Synergy Labs, the Florida Department of Transportation, Citrix Systems Inc. and Kaufman Rossin, CPA will be among the organizations present.
Niemah Butler, assistant director of employer relations and internship, said the career fair is an opportunity for students to prepare early for their careers.
“We have invited many freshmen-friendly organizations with available positions,” said Butler. “Whether it is your freshmen year at college, or your sophomore, junior or senior year, there’s something for every student at the career fair.”
Career Adviser Maggie Morrissey said the expo is a chance for students to come out and learn more about companies in their field of interest.
“It will be a great chance for students to network with employers and also a chance for students to possibly secure an internship or a job opportunity,” said Morrissey. “It’s all about making that initial connection.”
Senior elementary education major Monica Sapp said the career expo will be a great opportunity for her to make connections with employers.
“I go to the career fairs every year, and every year they get better and better. The fairs help to expose me to different job opportunities within my career,” said Sapp.
The Office of Career Development’s new job and internship platform, Handshake, will have a formal list of all the organizations that will be present along with the positions they’re hiring for.
The Office of Career Development will also have a prep steps area during the event. It will be a place for students to get some last minute tips from career advisors and do last minute prepping for the expo.
Butler said, “The role of the student is to do research. Something we encourage students to do is attend one of the Career Prep Sessions taking place so that students will know ahead of time what organizations are attending and what opportunities are available to them, so that when they go up to a table they can be strategic.”
Students should bring an updated resume and dress professionally. For any last minute questions, the Office of Career Development will host two Career Expo Prep Sessions on Sep. 21 from 5-6 p.m. and Sep. 22 from noon to 1 p.m. to in the Carl Desantis Building room 1054.
“Come out and build relationships, take advantage of career advisement appointments, take advantage of the drop in appointments, come to the prep events,” said Butler. “So when you get to the career fair, it is not this overwhelming feeling. We are helping you because at the end of the day, we are in the development process, and we are here to help develop our students.”
