Refugee camp catches fire in Greece
Thousands of refugees were forced to evacuate the island of Lesbos on Sep. 20 after fire struck. Police and witnesses said the fire, which destroyed over half of the refugee camp, was started by its residents. Tensions flared after residents protested over the poor living conditions and extensive wait time for amnesty.
Bombings suspect taken into custody
Ahmad Khan Rahami has been charged with five counts of attempted murder of a police officer and two second-degree possession charges. He was taken into custody on Sep. 19 for the explosions in New York and New Jersey on Sep. 17, ABC News reported. Rahami was found sleeping in a bar, whose owner called the police. Gunfire began when law enforcement arrived, injuring officers and Rahami. No links to terrorist groups concerning Rahami have been found at this time.
Dozens dead after boat capsizes off Egyptian coast
Around 42 bodies and 150 survivors have been rescued after a boat carrying 600 migrants capsized off the Egyptian coast. According to CNN, fishermen found the capsized boat on Sep. 21 and have been assisting the coast guard in looking for survivors.
Protests turn violent in Charlotte, NC after shooting of Keith Lamont Scott
After a day of protests, North Carolina declared a state of emergency in Charlotte, NC. According to CNN, the city erupted in protests after an African-American man, Keith Lamont Scott, was killed by police. At least one person has died as result of the protest, and at least four police officers have been injured. Protests began peacefully on Sep. 21, but as the night progressed, looting and violence began.
71st Session of UN General Assembly takes place
The 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly began in New York on Sep. 20. Over 140 Heads of State were expected to attend and hear speeches related to the theme “The Sustainable Development Goals: a universal push to transform our world.”
