Shark Speak: “How well does NSU represent minority populations?”

nishat

Nishat Ahmed,

junior psychology major

“I think Nova represents minorities really well. There’s a lot of different ethnicities around here. There’s Caucasians, Asians, African Americans… Although, I haven’t seen a lot of Hispanics, but then again I haven’t met that many people yet, anyway. But from what I can tell by just looking around campus I think it’s pretty diverse.”

megan

Megan Springer,

freshman biology major

“I think they’re represented pretty well. There’s plenty of opportunities for everyone to get culturally immersed, if they want to. If you try, there’s so many options on this campus to get involved. There was free Cuban food for the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. I’ve never had Cuban food! I’m going to go to the Indian Student Association’s movie night coming up.”

dominic

Dominic Gonzalez,

senior psychology major

“I would say they’re represented in a positive way. I actually serve as the minority senator for the student government association. There are so many organizations for minorities. They show that minorities can go beyond [just the color of their skin]. With all of the diversity on campus, it highlights the minorities well.”

natalie

Natalie Guzman,

junior environmental science

“I am a part of the minority population and I can really speak for the Greek system that they’re not doing very well. I am open to diversity and PC [Panhellenic Council] should be open to more diversity.”

alyssa

Alyssa Yarbough

sophomore communication major

“I do think they are represented very well. There’s a lot of organizations and clubs and things that people can get involved in. There’s also a lot of awareness so people can get to know other cultures, as to where they’re not in the dark about other people and where they come from.”
