Hurricane Matthew closes NSU

Due to Hurricane Matthew, Broward County and NSU are currently under hurricane warning, which means that hurricane-strength winds may be in the area within 24-36 hours.

According to an NSU weather advisory released at 10:15 a.m. on Oct. 5, all NSU campuses throughout Florida and Puerto Rico will close at 5 p.m. on Oct. 5 and re-open Oct. 10. NSU encourages all students, faculty and staff to complete hurricane preparations, making sure that their workplaces and homes are secure. For shelter information, NSU advises residential students to refer to communications from the Office of Student Housing. For additional updates, visit nova.edu/hurricane or call the NSU emergency hotline at 800-256-5065.

The Official Broward County Hurricane Preparedness guide suggests that residents of Broward County be prepared to be self-sufficient for three to five days after a major storm. This means having a three to five day supply of water, food and toiletries for each person, as well as a first aid kit and at least a two-week supply of medicines. Also, have on hand flashlights and extra batteries, and a battery-operated or hand-crank radio in case of a power outage.

The preparedness guide recommends Broward County residents secure homes by putting hurricane-proof shutters on windows and glass doors and securing loose objects outside. Also, the guide suggests identifying the safest room in the house, which is usually an interior room with no windows and making plans to take shelter in this room in the event of a direct hit.
