Rock cover songs challenge the original

By: Ben Underhill

YouTube stars often start out their careers by posting covers of existing songs, and sometimes, famous bands cover already famous songs. Rock bands have been covering pop songs or other rock songs for years, giving it their own spin. Needless to say, the songs are fun to listen to due to their change in styles. Here are just a few great cover songs.

“A Thousand Miles” by Icarus the Owl

Originally by Vanessa Carlton, this alternative band brings a fun, rock-centered style that can easily pump you up. Icarus the Owl’s other music sounds like the love child of Yellowcard and Fall Out Boy, and the sound is present in the vocals and drum rhythms of the song. This song is perfect for car rides with alternative rock-loving friends who love to sing along.

“Someone Like You” by First Class Ticket

Although the Ice Nine Kills cover of this song is a bit more popular, First Class Ticket does a fantastic job of bringing a punk vibe to an originally softer heartbreak song by Adele. The tempo is faster due to the rock and roll nature of the song. This Germany-based band makes the song fun and perfect for a gym playlist.

“Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” by Ice Nine Kills

This classic nostalgia song by Green Day takes a slightly heavier tone with Ice Nine Kills’ authentic sound. Part of the Punk Goes 90s album, this song makes a punk song punker. With fun, slightly fast-paced drums mixed with rocking guitar riffs, this song is yet another great sing along. It also makes the perfect addition to any gym playlist.

“All Star” by Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!

This is a post-hardcore, underground garage-punk take on a classic meme song made famous by Smash Mouth. The cover has a dash of cynical reggae, which makes the song even more pumped up and fun to sing along to than it already is. With unique guitar solos and an evident change in style from the original, this song is sure to please.

“Baby One More Time” by Bowling for Soup

Britney Spears most likely did not expect her cult-classic song to be made into a rock cover. Bringing a purely indie pop-punk vibe, Bowling for Soup mixes the song up just enough to make it unique but still keeps the sound of the original.

These songs are just a few of the fantastic covers that exist on the web. Ranging from acoustic covers to straight up metal, a little internet surfing can reveal some fantastic musical finds.
