Although our staff is usually salty, sometimes we have a sweet tooth. Check out our favorite sugary concoctions below, and try not to salivate.
Jacqueline Lytle, co-editor-in-chief, said, “Sweetheart (Ain’t She Sweet) from Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor.”
“Jaxson’s is well-known to most college students; if you have no clue what I’m talking about, grab a group of friends and head to Dania to check it out. With tons of ice cream flavors and concoctions, Jaxson’s has something for everyone. For me, it’s the Sweetheart (Ain’t She Sweet) sundae – opposites attract. I love bananas. I love butterscotch. And I love nuts. Need I say more?”
Carli Lutz, chief of visual design, said, “Banana Dream Cake from Toojays.”
“My favorite place to get dessert around here is Toojays. Toojays is a small chain of gourmet NY-style delis with a wide variety of goodies in their bakery, like black and white cookies, rugalach, muffins and brownies. My favorite thing to get there is their Banana Dream cake. It’s a banana cake with banana cream filling covered in chocolate icing, chocolate chips and walnuts. It’s an absolutely magical experience and I would gladly shove the whole cake in my mouth without any shame.”
Rachael Hirstein, news editor, said, “Frozen yogurt from Menchie’s.”
“Menchie’s is one of my top places to go for dessert because I love cold treats. They have a great variety of fro-yo flavors and toppings to choose from and there is an NSU student discount as well. I know I can get something different yet delicious every time I go.”
Jenna Kopec, features editor, said, “The Chocolada from Chocolada Bakery and Café.”
“Chocolada is one of my favorite places to go at any time of day. But when it comes to dessert and a bit of coffee, you can’t go wrong with their namesake pastry. This adorable heart-shaped chocolate brownie is a great treat to share but it tastes so good you won’t want to.”
Danielle Pucillo, multimedia manager, said, “Cannoli from Publix.”
“I have a preference for unconventional desserts, and one treat that I absolutely love is a cannoli. It’s an Italian pastry: a tube-shaped shell with sweetened ricotta cheese filling and both ends dipped in rich dark chocolate. The best place to get some fresh cannoli? Publix. It depends on the location, but generally the Publix located near the corner of University Drive and Peters Road has them at their bakery.”
Grace Ducanis, co-editor-in-chief, said, “Cookies and cream milkshake from Chick-fil-a.”
“This may not be the most high-end dessert in South Florida, but for a fast-food restaurant that specializes in chicken, Chick-fil-a makes a mean milkshake. Consistently creamy, deliciously sweet and reasonably priced, this treat will not fail to bring all of the boys to the yard. Then, bring all the boys to Chick-fil-a to get their own milkshake, because it’s just that good and you don’t want to share.”
Brianna Walker, news intern, said, “Molten Chocolate Cake from Chili’s.”
“When it comes to desserts I prefer to keep it simple, and nothing beats a good ol’ scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of a piece of cake. Although many restaurants serve variations of this dessert I think Chili’s does it best with their Molten Chocolate Cake. The dessert melts in your mouth and it is a must-try.”
Trenton Strafaci, sports intern, said, “Strawberry milkshake from Reef Treats.”
“I have to say my favorite dessert has to be the strawberry milkshake from a place called Reef Treats in Key Largo. When I went down there for vacation recently I asked one of my friends to recommend an ice cream or dessert place and she said to give Reef Treats a try. The strawberries were fresh and the shake was really cold and very creamy. It was definitely the best milkshake I’ve ever had.”
Nicole Chavannes, copy editor, said, “Crème Brûlée donut from Mojo Donuts.”
“When it comes to desserts, I like mine from places that specialize in it, so what better place for a tasty, sugary treat than a gourmet donut shop like Mojo Donuts? Located near the intersection of University Drive and Pines Boulevard., this place has such a variety of donut options that you won’t know what to do with yourself. From the mouthwatering Death by Chocolate to the unconventional Guava and Cheese, this place has a donut for everyone’s taste. My favorite is the Crème Brûlée because it’s simple, sweet and scrumptious.
