Detroit-native rapper Big Sean dropped his solid and anticipated album, “I Decided”, Feb. 3, selling nearly 150,000 copies during the albums debut week. This is his fourth album since Kanye West signed him in 2007. Since then, Big Sean has been spawning a litany of mixtapes with the likes of French Monatna, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne and Nas- keeping with the best by spitting rapid-fire lyrics.
In 2011, Big Sean dropped his first album, “Finally Famous,” and his second, “Hall of Fame,” in 2013. His third, “Dark Sky Paradise,” released in 2015, was inspired by his famous step-boost relationship with Ariana Grande, which earned him platinum status.
Big Sean’s fourth album, “I Decided,” is worth checking out – especially his collaboration with hip-hop icon, Eminem, featured on the track “No Favors.” This controversial new joint with Eminem is ‘lights out fire,’ with Eminem firing on all cylinders while spitting controversial lyrics about Donald Trump. This dual release with Big Sean and Eminem, his new song “Light,” featuring Jeremih, and his familiar hit songs released late 2016, “Bounce Back” and “Moves,” make the album worthwhile. On the album, Big Sean discusses what he has learned from the past and what will make him successful in the future.
This album is not just about a great artist or a bar set by a master emcee; it’s an inspiration for anybody that’s willing to listen and decide to create their own future. You decide. No one else. As Big Sean discussed on his guest appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon in January, the album is about “having that wisdom of an old man and having that wisdom throughout our path of life.”
Big Sean is a big talent and becoming a better wordsmith by the album. The beats and lyrics are all worth listening to. Big Sean is a beast in his own right, even up against heavyweight Marshall Mathers. This dual collaboration shows that Big Sean can go bar for bar with any rapper, but also has the ability to make quality music. From album to album, Big Sean’s music has gotten more emotional, meaning the new album, “I Decided,” might be his most emotional work to date – covering the trials and tribulations of relationships and overcoming the obstacles that made Big Sean a success story.
Sean knows his sound when it comes to picking beats. This album encompasses a variety of sound, ranging from trap to R&B. This variety keeps the tracks from sounding like generic hip-hop styles. This release is an endless sea of creativity that runs through the heart of Michigan.
“I Decided” by Big Sean, created by a plethora of elite producers, is worth looking at and encompasses Big Sean’s maturity, which is a nice departure from his previous albums and showcases his dexterous and lyrical command to a new generation of hip-hop aficionados.
