I’m sure you have seen the numerous ads for the movie, “A Wrinkle in Time.” As a Disney lover, I was extremely excited to see the movie, especially since it includes Oprah Winfrey (Mrs. Which), Reese Witherspoon (Mrs. Whatsit) and Chris Pine (Dr. Murry). Unfortunately, the movie did not meet my expectations, which is unusual for Disney films. If you are a Disney lover racing to see this movie, consider this review before buying your tickets.
In order to enjoy “A Wrinkle in Time,” you must love fantasy and sci-fi movies as well as those starring young actors and actresses. Storm Reid (Meg), Levi Miller (Calvin) and Deric McCabe (Charles Wallace) are the young stars of the show. Fortunately, these young actors make this mediocre movie slightly more endurable.
“A Wrinkle in Time” is about a middle school girl, Meg, traveling through the universe in search for her scientist father who has been missing for the last four years. Many of the scenes are in different planets of the universe and therefore, it was a little too make-believe. However, if you enjoy this genre, I encourage you to watch the movie as it does have interesting sound effects and is visually stimulating.
Children under the age of 12 might have difficulty understanding the true meaning of the movie. The moral of the story is that you must find and accept yourself before you can find and accept others. Meg never truly liked who she was, and until she could accept herself for whom she was, she couldn’t find or accept her missing father. This is very relevant to today as many teenagers, like Meg, are dissatisfied with their self-image, and do not feel accepted by society. The movie encourages people to learn to have confidence in themselves, and not join the IT — black darkness that represents evil in the movie.
Though the moral of the story was great, and it starred an amazing and talented cast, the movie was too make-believe and slow moving. The overall plot of the movie was hidden and difficult to ascertain, but the twist at the end makes the movie a bit more bearable. No spoilers. If you enjoy fantasy and sci-fi, I recommend you see this movie; if not, save your money. My overall rating of the movie is a 3 out of 5.
