Senior communication major Issa Dumwon published her first and only book last week titled “All the Reasons Why Reading is Stupid.”
She said she hopes that the book will help shed light on how often people waste their time reading, thinking they enjoy it or are getting some type of benefit from it.
“It’s just really crazy how people think they’re gaining something from something so passive. Like, books just plaster ideas onto you, you know? And then your life is impacted,” said Dumwon.
Dumwon was inspired to write the book by a recent social media phenomenon, #socialmediaistoxic, where individuals young and old flock to social media platforms to state everything they find wrong with said platforms.
“It’s genius because it’s like, you’re really getting to the root of the problem by using the exact medium you hate,” said Dumwon.
A local book critic and social media lover, Renee Reasonab, said, “This book is stupid and a waste of time. Her logic is just as flawed as that of the movement that inspired her. She’s just looking for a way to make a quick buck.”
Dumwon said, “Not true,” but she hopes that people buy her book before they give up reading all together.
Her book is available in select stores and online through iTunes and Amazon.
