Getting involved on campus: The tried-and-true remedy for homesickness

Change can be difficult; even the changes we’re most excited about, like starting or transfering to a new college. Of course, you will likely embrace the thrill of fresh adventures, but you will probably also be homesick and a tad bit overwhelmed. As someone who has lived through the experience of an awkward first semester, trust me when I say that he best remedy for these feelings is a heaping dose of community involvement.

Attend events

At NSU you won’t even need to leave campus to find something to do. Campus clubs, organizations and faculty put on events throughout the year from the more educational like TEDX talks to the “just for fun” activities like Super Bowl watch parties, lip sync battles and DIY crafting events hosted by the Office of Campus Life & Student Engagement.

Plus, if you ever get the urge for a change in scenery, consider taking a short ride on the Shark Shuttle to the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale where you can view amazing artworks by renowned artists for free. Or, you can sign up for one of the Office of Campus Life & Student Engagement’s Sharks on the Scene events, which have included concerts with DJ Khaled and Jay Z, trips to a neighboring Dave & Buster’s arcade or to SkyZone, for an evening of indoor skydiving.

Join a club, organization, sorority or fraternity

There are more than 100 clubs and organizations on campus so you’re bound to find at least one that you’d like to join. Additionally, students are welcome to take part in Greek Life at NSU by joining a sorority or fraternity. Joining any of these groups will allow you to meet many like-minded individuals who are passionate about the same things that motivate you.

Volunteer

Service ventures are a great way to meet new friends while serving others in the community. Clubs, organizations, sororities and fraternities routinely participate in volunteer activities, so be sure to keep an eye out for announcements about such opportunities. Alternatively, the Office of Student Life & Civic Engagement (SLCE) hosts Sharks and Service week-long and weekend-long service trip events throughout the year. Last year, these trips included destinations like New Orleans and Puerto Rico.

For additional information and to stay up-to-date on these service opportunities, visit SLCE’s Orgsync page, call 954-262-7195 or email slce@nova.edu.

Get a job

What if I told you that you could make money by enjoying collaborating on projects that you are genuinely interested in while working alongside members of the NSU community? Well, it’s possible. From front desk administrative jobs to marketing and social media, no matter what field you’re planning to join after you graduate, there’s a job for you that will help you gain necessary real-world experience while you pursue your degree.
