NSU’s Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement (SLCE) will host Make a Difference Day on Oct. 27. According to their flyer, they will be removing trash in the water and on the beach. Opportunities are available for scuba diving, snorkeling, and beach clean up. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 27. Transportation and lunch will be provided.
According to Annie Goyanes, the SLCE civic engagement program assistant, SLCE “will be doing a beach cleanup, but the unique part about this beach cleanup is that there is going to be people picking up trash on the sand, snorkeling to get trash and we are also getting the scuba club involved so they can scuba and pick up trash as well. It will be fun. People can stay after to go to the beach.”
Make a Difference Day started on the fourth Saturday of October in 1992. Since then, this has been an annual community service effort across the nation. Make a Difference Day is a part of the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement Days of Service. Last year, the SLCE office partnered with ArtServe for their Open Canvas Art Project. ArtServe is an organization that “helps artists turn their passion for art into a viable profession. Offering a range of support services, ArtServe provides opportunities for collaboration, exhibition, performance, professional development, marketing and media programs- all as a means of creating a vibrant, culturally rich community,” according to ArtServe’s mission statement.
Other than Make a Difference Day, the SLCE office also hosts 9/11 service day, MLK service day, Earth Day of Service, NSU Pride and Service Day and National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
