Super Bowl LIII to take place in Atlanta

Super Bowl LIII has been scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 3 at 6:30 p.m. NFC Champions, the Los Angeles Rams will be playing against the AFC Champions, the New England Patriots at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia. This stadium has a retractable glass ceiling so weather conditions could be better for the fans in the seats. The stadium holds more than 80,000, according to SportingNews.

Linehan no longer Cowboys’ offensive coordinator

The Dallas Cowboys announced that Scott Linehan will no longer be the team’s offensive coordinator, according to ESPN. “This was very much a mutual decision, and there was a great deal of common ground and shared understanding between both of us during our meetings,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said in a statement. “Scott has had an incredibly positive impact on our football team. He has been instrumental in the development and success of a significant number of our veteran and younger players. He is an outstanding football coach, a great friend and we wish him and his family nothing but the absolute best moving forward.” It is unclear who will be taking the position next.

NASCAR Hall of Famer Glen Wood dies at 93

On Friday January 18, Glen Wood, one of the founders of Wood Brothers Racing, passed away at age 93. He was a Wood Brothers Racing co-founder, alongside his brother, Leonard Wood. WBR has 99 wins at the NASCAR Cup Series and has worked with legendary racers. “In building the famed Wood Brothers Racing at the very beginnings of our sport, Glen laid a foundation for NASCAR excellence that remains to this day. As both a driver and a team owner, he was, and always will be, the gold standard,” NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France said in a statement.

Chicago Bulls rookie suffers severe thumb injury

The Chicago Bulls’ Wendell Carter Jr. has been recommended surgery for a thumb injury from the game against Lakers. Carter, one of the team’s newest centers, has been told by Chicago-based doctors that his injury was originally misdiagnosed as a sprain. The anticipated surgical recovery is around 8-12 weeks.

Serena Williams wins in Australian Open return match

On Tuesday, January 15, Serena Williams won a match against Tatjana Maria 6-0, 6-2 in the first round. This has been her first match in the Australian Open since her performance while pregnant in the 2017 Open. According to the Washington Post, Serena “…like[s] to jump in the deep end and swim,” Williams said in an on-court interview. The match itself wasn’t that hard for Williams since the German was ranked 74 and entered with an 11-15 record. Serena is aiming for her eighth title in Australia and 24 Slam singles trophy overall.
