Bianca Andreescu wins Indian Wells title

Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu won the BNP Paribas Open with a record of 6-4, 3-6 and 6-4 on March 17. Andreescu is the second youngest player to win the title in the tournament’s history, after Serena Williams who claimed the title at 17 years old. According to the Associated Press, “Andreescu won on her fourth match point when Kerber netted a backhand. She broke Kerber three times in the third set, rallying from a 3-2 deficit to take four of the final five games.”

Yankee’s added another play to injured list

The New York Yankees added reliever Dellin Betances to their list of injured players. Betances sustained an impingement on his right shoulder. According to the New York Times, “The Yankees were already expecting to begin their season without a few players–center fielder Aaron Hicks, and pitchers Luis Severino and C.C. Sabathia.” Betances told the New York Times, “I just thought it would get better, but when I pitched, it still felt like I wasn’t there. And we only have a week left, so if I keep pushing myself I don’t think it was going to be the right move.”

Chuck Person pleads guilty to corruption charge

Chuck Person, former Auburn assistant basketball coach, pleaded guilty to a bribery charge for accepting about $100,000 from agents and advisers. Person was fired in Sept 2017 after the charges were filed. According to the New York Times, “ He became the fourth assistant coach to plead guilty to charges that stemmed from cases alleging widespread corruption in the college basketball recruiting. His bribery trial had been set to begin later this year.” Two more people are being tried in April in the same case.

Olympic swimmer dies at 26

Australian silver medalist and swimmer, Kenneth To, died while training at the Gator Swim Club in Gainesville last week. According to the Associated Press, “To won six medals for Australia at the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore, including gold in 400-meter medley. At the 2013 worlds in Barcelona, To was part of Australia’s silver medal-winning 400 medley relay squad.” As of Thursday, the cause of death has not been released.
