It’s summertime, and while we may not be able to indulge in our usual summer activities, we can still find many ways to combat that summertime sadness and boredom. July is National Anti-Boredom Month because, according to the National Day Calendar, “After July 4th, there’s not much going on and it’s the hotter part of the summer break from school.” While even some of our Fourth of July weekends were uneventful, there are still plenty of activities to do this summer that stimulate our minds.
Get physical
Dance
A great way to fight off boredom is to dance. Dancing is not only a fun way to keep yourself entertained, but it also helps us to produce serotonin making us feel happier. Find a song you really like and just move your body to the beat. If you’re feeling up for it, try looking up dance routines, following along or making a dance TikTok.
Exercise
Exercise is a great way to not only keep you entertained, but also keep you healthy and active. Getting exercise helps change the scenery, can get you outside and acts as a stimuli. Try following a workout video, going on a bike ride, walk or run, or going to the gym.
Get cleaning
Organize
While not everyone likes spending time organizing, given the current situation we are in, organizing is a great way to stay stimulated that has many benefits. Organizing not only helps you maintain a clean space, but also helps you gain a sense of control and declutter your own mind. Try following the KonMari method or checking out organization videos on YouTube.
Rearrange
Similar to organizing, rearranging the items in your space or even on your phone can help keep you entertained and also is beneficial for your mood and mental health. Rearranging the items in your space helps revitalize those items and provides a change to what you’re used to. This can stimulate creativity and can even help you to think about purposes and repurposes.
Get creative
Cook
While some often might think that getting creative requires something artsy like painting, creating music, getting crafty or drawing, cooking is also a great way to get creative that you can eat. Whether you enjoy cooking savory dishes or baking sweet treats, in the kitchen, there’s something for everyone to try. Start by looking at the ingredients you have or decide right away what you want to make and have fun with it. Grab a recipe and make it your own or start from scratch creating something new.
Discover your talents
Now that it is summertime and we’re mostly at home, it is the perfect time to see what talents you have that you might have been aware of. Try painting using different mediums or drawing or playing an instrument. Even if you’re not so great at first, with practice you can get better at anything. Discovering a talent and finding new hobbies are great ways to ensure some entertainment and self-discovery this summer.
