This Halloween is going to be a bit different due to the pandemic. People may not feel comfortable trick-or-treating because that means being around people and walking up to people’s doors for candy. As we approach Halloween, some counties and states may decide to even prohibit trick-or treating. But even through the toughest of times, it is important to keep traditions alive. Traditions bring a sense of familiarity and comfort which can be extremely beneficial given the global pandemic we are currently facing. Halloween is a holiday that children, teens, and adults look forward to. Decorating can be what saves Halloween this year.
Halloween is a fun holiday and it is a fun holiday to decorate for. People pick out pumpkins and make jack-o-lanterns to use as decorations. People flood the streets and look at all the places with decorations and get filled with the spooky holiday feeling.
Halloween for me was always a day to look forward to since I was a kid. Pulling out the bin of decorations gave the warm and fuzzy feeling that fall was here. Seeing the decorations light up at night while strolling down the streets to get candy put the biggest smile on my face. You are never too old to trick-or-treat, and you are especially never too old to decorate for Halloween. The meaning of Halloween changed from when we were six to now, but it is always nice to see Halloween lights hanging from houses.
The best part about decorating for Halloween is that the decorations can be handmade. From the jack-o-lanterns to the toilet paper in the trees, it is all memories that we have and can still create even throughout the pandemic. I still get excited about getting spooky decorations and picking out a costume with my friends to this day. The decorations are my motivation to get ready for the spooky season approaching. Think about what motivates you to get into the spooky feels. Is it the costumes, the movies, the decorations? The decorations, the movies, and the weather depending where you are from, are what all makes Halloween such a unique and special holiday. Even though times are tough right now, it is important to give children a sense of familiarity, and we can do that by decorating. We can string up some Halloween lights, put out a jack-o-lantern and hang some spooky spiders on the door.
My point is, we love seeing all the decorations when Halloween is rounding the corner. Just because we are older and are living a new normal doesn’t mean we should give up on traditions. Let’s bring the Halloween spook back.
