Recognizing Veterans Day at NSU

We all know that Veterans Day falls on Nov. 11, but when did this holiday start? 

The fighting of World War I stopped on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month — for that reason, President Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as Veterans Day, or as it was known at that time, Armistice Day. The official title would be changed on June 1,1954 to honor U.S. veterans from all prior wars.

Veterans have the ability to enjoy a day filled with memories of their service, parades and appreciation from members of their community — including those at NSU — for the sacrifices they have made. 

Students, faculty and staff who are a part of the military community and the Veteran Resource Center (VRC) at NSU, located on the first floor of the DeSantis building room 1045, work to ensure that all veteran-related activities are inclusive to the entire NSU community.

For the week of Veterans Day, the VRC will have daily activities to commemorate the special day. Below are the activities you can participate in to honor veterans.

 

Wednesday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. 

Donuts and Coffee 

Hosted by the Military affairs resource center in the VRC office.

Thursday from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. 

Hiring Fair 

Hosted by Paychecks for Patriots.

Friday from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. 

Nominate a Veteran Recognition 

Hosted by RadioX, which can be heard on 88.5 FM.
