Lawsuit filed by families of couple killed in mishandled Houston police raid

 

Almost two years after the fatal raid on Harding Street in Houston, TX, the families of the married couple killed by Houston Police Department officers have sued the city of Houston as well as the police involved in the incident for violating the constitutional civil rights of their relatives. Lawyers for both the families, Rhogena Nicholas and Dennis Turtle, each filed individual lawsuits on Wednesday, Jan. 27 in the District Court for the Southern District of Texas. Mike Doyle, the family attorney of Nicholas, said he believes the two lawsuits will most likely be combined into one case when it rises to the federal court. Both suits appeal for monetary damage from the city for an unspecified amount. 

 

Entertainment industry trailblazer Cicely Tyson dies at 96

 

Cicely Tyson, the African-American actress and honorary Oscar winner, died Thursday, Jan. 28. Best known for starring in the Emmy-winning television film “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” as well as her Academy-nominated appearance in “Sounder” (1972), Tyson’s acting career remained consistently significant through the years, often assuming roles that tackled issues of social justice and racism. Tyson’sdeath was announced by her family through her long-time manager, Larry Thompson, who said, “With heavy heart, the family of Miss Cicely Tyson announces her peaceful transition this afternoon,” in a statement made to the AFP. 

 

Liquid nitrogen leak in Georgia food processing plant kills six people

 

Six people were killed and 10 were hospitalized after a liquid nitrogen leak at Prime Pak Food processing plant in Gainesville, GA occurred on Thursday, Jan. 28. Fire crew official Zack Brackett from Hall county reported burns occurring around 10:12 a.m. Units arrived to find the building almost entirely evacuated with a few people experiencing medical emergencies in and around the facility, Brackett said. Five people died on the site and the other died after arriving at Northeast Georgia Health System, a hospital spokesperson said. Those hospitalized included three Gainsville firefighters and one Hall County firefighter who all reported respiratory issues. According to Brackett, there were no explosions and the cause of the leak is still under current investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

 

Indianapolis teen charged with six counts of murder

 

Raymond Ronald Lee Childs III, 17, has been charged for the alleged shooting and killing of his father, stepmother, two teenage relatives and a 19-year-old pregnant woman in his home, announced by a prosecutor on Jan. 28. Childs was arrested on Monday of last week, and charged with six counts of murder, including one count for the death of the woman’s unborn child, which was due in one week, said Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears. Childs also faces an attempted murder charge for harming another relative, and a count of carrying a
