On Friday, Feb. 26, the Black Student Union (BSU) at NSU presented their annual Black Excellence Showcase. The event wrapped up Black History Month at NSU by featuring music, art, poetry, and modeling by students. Held on the library quad, the event also featured food, games, a Greek roll call and some remarks from the new Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Office.
“The [event] is the time of year where we showcase Black excellence in as many fields as possible, such as poetry, art, singing, rapping and dancing. It’s also a time for us to congregate throughout the university,” said Jamalmash Noel, accounting major and president of the BSU.
Jessica Goldson, behavioral neuroscience major and event planning chair of the BSU, explained the significance behind holding the showcase this year.
“It was unanimous across our entire [executive] board that we want to have this event, no matter the form we have to have it in, because not only is this an annual event that BSU holds, but also because, with everything going on with COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter Movement in the media, we just wanted a time where students at NSU can showcase the great parts of being Black, not just the parts that are being shown in the media,” she said.
“We still wanted students to be able to get out and showcase their talents or come see their other fellow students that they only see on a Zoom screen for a couple hours a week and watch them be great. Just to have that time to be regular college students and have that getway from the COVID-19 drama, the presendiental drama and everything else that is going on,” said Goldson.
