We are told from a young age that we can be anything we choose to be and pursue any career we want to, but is that really true? In a society where the people with the most money benefit, can we really choose to follow a dream that would maybe not grant us as great a fortune?
We live in a world where most people expect you to have a stable job or career after you finish your education. Being a starving artist isn’t really something many people strive for anymore, or at least, it isn’t something accepted much by parents.
When I finished high school, I told my parents that I wanted to major in English because I wanted to be an author. My dad actually laughed at me. That moment became eye-opening for me.
I had always been told that I could do whatever I wanted with my life, that I could take any path I chose as long as I was happy, but I think that only applied if my parents agreed with what I wanted to do. I found that I could only follow my dreams if they were practical in the eyes of my parents or society. I have been led to believe that being secure and practical will always outweigh a dream that cannot provide the kind of stability a career in a flourishing field could offer. That being said, dreams may always be a fantasy that may never be reached if there are more secure routes available.
