Finding Fitness: Spotify tunes for working out

Most people need music to listen to while working out. No matter what way you workout, listening to music can be the push you need to make the best out of your workout.

According to a 2019 article published in the Journal of Psychology of Sport and Exercise,  “When the participants listened to the upbeat, motivational music, their heart rates and peak power output were both higher than when they listened to a podcast or no audio whatsoever. What’s more, participants reported enjoying the workout more afterward when they listened to music, compared to when they listened to a podcast or no audio.”

Whether you’re running, lifting weights or doing yoga, having a soundtrack to motivate you and get you pumped up helps get you through even the toughest of workouts. Luckily, we live in an age where music platforms like Spotify generate their own playlists, including countless workout ones. Below is a playlist composed of the top songs from Spotify’s most popular workout playlists, but be sure to check out the “Workout” genre on Spotify for longer and more specific playlists.

“No Judgement” by Niall Horan

The softer energy of this song makes best for the beginning of your workout session. It’s upbeat enough to get you motivated while warming up. The lyrics are also reassuring for those who may be nervous to exercise: “When you’re with me, no judgement!” These lyrics may be meant for relationships and significant others, but they apply here if you squint hard enough.

“Fallin’ (Adrenaline)” by Why Don’t We

This song is a fun pop tune with a nice beat behind it. The cheesy love lyrics aren’t too bad either, making it a fun listen. With a name like “Adrenaline,” it’s hard to not be a great workout song.

“Lovefool” by twocolors

Making use of older lyrics, “Lovefool” offers a new twist on a classic song. An exciting beat featuring loud bass, snapping fingers and a synthesizer offers a fun tune to bounce around to while exercising.

“Never Change” by Don Diablo

“Never Change” is an electronic pop song that works to get you energized. A piano melody is paired with a more electric-sounding beat that is sure to make you feel reinvigorated during your sets.

Girl” by KC Lights

With lyrics about love laid over a repetitive, but fun, beat, “Girl” makes you want to dance like your life depends on it. This song may be better if used for cardio or dance related workouts as opposed to weightlifting or yoga.

“Like This” by DubVision

“Like This” is a largely instrumental dubstep song. There are a few repeated lines, but the best part of the song is when those lines aren’t present. Multiple bass drops and loud energetic tones are the backbone of this song, making it great for giving you a boost of energy mid-workout.

“Show Me Your Love” by the Bassjackers

Another electronic-pop song, “Show Me Your Love” brings similar upbeats and exciting vibes to your ears as you make your way through your workout. It has a bit of a slower start with a nice buildup to the drop, which makes for the best part of the track.

“When Legends Rise” by Godsmack

As one of the heavier songs on this playlist, “When Legends Rise” does a great job at making you feel powerful. This song is probably best to listen to when you start to feel a bit tired or unmotivated.

“MANIFEST” by STARSET

This is the other heavy song on the playlist, but it’s not too over the top. A few verses have more of a punch than others, but the softer vocals and other verses balance out the guitar solos where you’ll want to bang your head and throw your hair around mid-workout. Much like “When Legends Rise,” “MANIFEST” will make you feel like a superhero about to save the city instead of just someone doing squats at the gym or at home.

“White Flag” by JOSEPH

While this song is softer than the two previous songs, that doesn’t mean it isn’t good for a workout. An exciting drumbeat is played behind lyrics about never giving up and making it through everything life throws at you. If you prefer motivational lyrics to upbeat melodies, this song is for you.
