Gill Out: Fresh Kitchen

Fresh Kitchen is a make-your-own food bowl style restaurant with healthy options for all diets. The restaurant is located on University Drive and, while not within walking distance of NSU’s main campus it is only  five-minutes down the road.

Upon entering the establishment, there is a clear path for patrons to take that wraps around the right side of the seating area and leads to the front of the cafeteria-style area. Along the wall there is a beautiful pink shelf arrangement of several types of potted plants.

I ordered an four bowl, which comes with two bases, one protein, one extra side and one topping. I chose brown rice and cauliflower mashed potatoes, grilled salmon for protein and maple syrup sweet potatoes along with some cheese.

The rice was some the best I’ve had in my life It was coupled perfectly with the grilled salmon that came with a tiny slice of lemon on top. I don’t know if the salmon was advertised as a fillet or not because I did find one bone in it but there were no other bones to pick out, no matter how long I looked.

The maple syrup sweet potatoes were the perfect combination of maple syrup and sweet potatoes. They were great for a couple of bites until I realized that I don’t really like that combination, as it was too sweet. The cheese helped balance out the taste. Finally, the cauliflower mashed potatoes were perfectly soft and full of flavor. The whole meal left me feeling light but satisfied.

Due to feeling so light, I decided to give their cookies a try as well. Made almost entirely from almonds, I thought that they would be an interesting dessert. Not only were they delicious but they were just as light as my meal. After eating that sweet treat, I felt like I could run a marathon.

The prices of the bowls are within the $10 to $15 range. It’s not a bad price for a college student but I would not eat there every day.

The staff was polite and attentive, but my favorite part of the restaurant is the food and how fast it can be dished out to you. My entire stay only lasted around 20 minutes.

Fresh Kitchen is a great place to stop on a lunch break, grab some food and run. I loved how I felt after eating it, which is not something I say about a lot of food I eat.
