NSU and the college student mental health crisis

All across the country mental health crises are on the rise among college students according to Erika Correa. Since March 2020 this has also been reflected at Nova Southeastern University as seen in an increase of students using the services provided by NSU.

This summer Henderson underwent a few changes. Henderson is now known as the Center For Student Counseling And Well-Being By Henderson Behavioral Health and are located in the Student Affairs Building on the Davie Campus. The new office occupies the entire third floor of the building. This move was pushed for by students and the Undergraduate Student Government Association. NSU agreed and gave the center a freshly remodeled office space that allows for expansion and the addition of more staff.

Correa, the assistant director of the Center For Student Counseling and Well-Being, discussed what NSU is doing to aid the student body with the increase for mental health services.

“We make a lot of effort to make our services known during orientation as well as attend outreach events, orientation, RA and GA training. Clubs and organizations reach out and they (student center) strive to collaborate but the last year and a half has made that harder,” said Correa

The center will also continue their telehealth platform to aid students who would prefer to not meet in person. The telehealth platform had a great response from students according to Correa.

NSU has also created the Student CARE Team in an effort to help students who may be struggling. The CARE Team allows for students and staff to reach out to get help for another student.

On their website page it said, “The team serves to supplement existing campus processes such as student conduct, access to student counseling, residential life responses, and other traditional means of supporting students by ensuring that the “dots are connected” to better understand a referred student’s experience.”

With the NSU Student Care Team and the Center For Student Counseling And Well-Being By Henderson Behavioral Health, NSU has put forth an effort to assist the student body with improvements on counseling services and ways to seek guidance for mental health management.

Correa also said, “you’re not alone and it’s okay to not be okay and that’s what the center is here for. Please reach out if you’re feeling like you could benefit from the services. There are free counselling sessions so take advantage of them.”
