News briefs – 1/12

MLK day of service 

The Office of Student Leadership and Civic engagement is hosting a day of service in honor of MLK day on Jan 17. SLCE and NSU will be working with the YMCA of South Florida to serve the Sistrunk Neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale with a neighborhood cleanup. Supplies including gloves, pickup sticks and trash bags will be provided. Transportation will also be available round trip from the Shark Circle. The shuttle departs at 8:30 a.m. and the event is scheduled to end at 1:30 p.m. This service event does count towards an RSO service requirement. 

 

Chat N Chew 

The Diversity Student Council will be having a Chat n Chew on Jan. 26. It will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the IMPACT Zone. The event will consist of several different topics of conversation amongst peers to help facilitate dialogue around diversity and help others gain a better understanding of one another. Food and drinks will be provided. If you wish to attend, RSVP on Shark hub.  

 

2022 MLK weekend SAS – Fort Lauderdale 

Sharks and Service (SAS) has announced a service trip with a focus on poverty and homelessness in Broward and Miami Dade. Those who participate will be traveling to and from NSU’s main campus on Friday through Monday to serve social issues of immigration in the South Florida community. The cost of the trip will be $25, and food and transportation are included in that cost. 

 

Ice cream with the Dean 

Ice cream with the Dean will be starting up again this semester at the Student Affairs building patio at noon on Fridays. This is an opportunity for students to pick from a variety of free ice-creams and chat with their friends and Dean Williams, the Dean of undergraduate studies and Vice President of student affairs. RVSP is not necessary, all students are encouraged to come by whenever they can to get some ice cream with the dean. 

 

What do you stand for? 

The office of student leadership and civic engagement will be hosting an event called “What do you stand for?” It will take place Jan. 20 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the UC Hall of Fame. The event will offer students the opportunity to state what they stand for amongst each other. There will also be the opportunity for participants to spin a wheel with a variety of human rights topics that will be open for discussion in the group in order to help broaden everyone’s understanding about the different forms of human rights.
