New record for youngest woman to fly around the world
Cara Rutherford, 19, became the youngest woman and first ever Belgian to fly solo around the world as well as the first person in the world to do it in an ultralight aircraft in a span of 155 days. Rutherford faced harsh weather and life-threatening flying conditions during her trip, but still remained successful. The New York Times stated, “Ms. Rutherford broke a record set in 2017 by Shaesta Waiz, an Afghan American pilot who was 30 at the time. Before Ms. Rutherford landed on Thursday, Ms. Waiz said that she hadn’t expected a 19-year-old would break her record: ‘It just goes to show that it doesn’t matter what your gender or your age is; it’s all about determination.’”
New York Yankees promote Rachel Balkovec to manager of the Low-A Tampa Tarpons
The New York Yankees promoted Rachel Balkovec to manager of the Low-A Tampa Tarpons as the first woman to skipper a team affiliated with Major League Baseball. According to NBC News, “The 34-year-old Balkovec joined the Yankees organization as a hitting coach in 2019, making her the first woman with that job full-time in affiliated baseball. She got her first position in pro ball with the St. Louis Cardinals as a minor league strength and conditioning coach in 2012.”
22-month-old goes on $2000 shopping spree
22-month-old Ayaansh Kumar ordered nearly $2000 in furniture using his mom’s credit card. According to NBC News, the young boy got ahold of his mom’s phone and checked out her cart, spending $2000. The family became very confused when things began arriving at their door. NBC News stated, “Some of the packages barely fit through the front door. Turns out, little Ayaansh was the one who bought accent chairs, flower stands and other household items that his mother had been looking at for their new home in Monmouth Junction. The packages kept coming all week.” The family plans to return all the items and Walmart has promised them a full refund.
Mark Cuban launches his online pharmacy
Billionaire Mark Cuban has officially opened an online pharmacy that specializes in offering affordable prescription drugs on Jan 19. The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company’s (MCCPDC) goal is to sell pharmacy drugs at a wholesale price and offer sales to consumers. ABC News stated, “One medication available at a reduced price is Imatinib, a leukemia treatment. According to the press release, the retail price of Imatinib is $9,657 per month and costs $120 a month with a common voucher. MCCPDC says it will offer the medication for $47 per month.”
