Comic book movies have been some of the best-selling movies for over a decade now and growing up, almost everyone I have ever met loved some type of superhero. The biggest debate over the years was not which superhero was better, it was which universe they came from was better. The debate between the Marvel cinematic universe and the DC cinematic universe is growing more and more popular, but how does someone figure out which one is better?
Let’s be honest, it is hard to compare the two universes since they are so different, yet so similar at the same time. How does someone measure which one is better? Is it by how many movies they have, how many comics they have, how comic-book accurate the movie is? Do people judge based on who’s acting in it and if they are attractive or not? I like to rate the different universes based on how comic-book accurate the movie is and how many movies they have. In that aspect, Marvel will often take the cake.
According to an interview with DC screenwriter David S. Goyer, “Marvel’s had consistent leadership for the last 15 years or more, whereas DC hasn’t. One of the other things that have made Marvel incredibly successful is all of their adaptations are true to the source material. They don’t try to change things up. I would say, try to hew closer to what was the original intent. So, it’s having a consistent universe, having consistent leadership and staying true to the source material.” With Kevin Feige being an incredible production manager since 2008, the MCU has an incredible source of accuracy to the comics and as a plus, the actors are very easy on the eyes.
On the other hand, the DC universe has created some of the most iconic characters ever, and some of my favorites as well like the Joker, Batman and Harley Quinn. DC has Marvel beat because of its characters and the characters’ impact on their world. The main reason why DC comics outshine Marvel comics is that the characters in the universe are more unique and more empowering. Even though one hardly ever sees new DC movies coming out, when they do, they are a masterpiece. Everything from the visuals, to the CGI, to just the script itself, is just as they say, chef’s kiss. In addition to the new movies, one of my favorite DC movies, “Joker” featuring Joaquin Phoenix, won nine Oscars in 2019.
In the end, whether you cannot decide on which cinematic universe is the best, realize that they are both different and both just as amazing so there is no need to choose one that outshines the other.
