NSU’s chapter of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will host the Walk for Love walkathon, to raise awareness and money for UNICEF, around Gold Circle Lake on Feb. 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Ira Fonseca, senior international studies major, said that “Walk for Love” will be an interactive fitness day and that the group hopes to make it an annual event.
Registration will open at 11 a.m. so UNICEF can keep track of the number of attendees, but attendees can come and go at any time. Donations of at least $1 will be required.
Signs will be set up along the path with statistics on children and poverty. There will also be a disc jockey and two complementary Zumba classes will be held from 2 to 4 p.m.
Marco Báez, senior international studies, criminal justice and history major, said, “I think one of the main goals of NSU is to create community service and put a spark of helping or aiding other people in our students. UNICEF wants to help initiate that spark.”
NSU’s UNICEF has contacted Delta Phi Epsilon, Alpha Phi Omega, the Venezuelan Club and the Roteract Club to set up tables around the lake to promote their organizations and sell Valentine’s Day items.
This is the first event that UNICEF will host on campus and Baez said they hope to have at least 100 people attend.
The UNICEF club began last semester. Fonseca said that it was a long process that required an accepted application into the UNICEF Foundation and an approval by NSU.
Still, Fonseca believes it was worth the wait.
“I’ve always been interested in doing humanitarian things for a good cause,” Fonseca said.
UNICEF provides health care, immunizations, clean water, sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief, and other goods and services to more than 190 countries and territories worldwide.
