Alice in zombieland

There are no tea parties where this Alice is going. There are only multitudes of the walking-dead seeking one thing, and one thing only, a bowlful of Alice.

Alice (Milla Jojovich) is, of course, the main character in the mega action-adventure film “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” the fourth installment of the successful franchise based on the popular video game.

Allow me to break the fourth-wall by saying that I’ve never seen any of the other “Resident Evil” films, and as many movies as I watch, I wasn’t particularly looking forward to this one. It just seemed like another mindless action film, with pretty girls, ultra-violence, poor acting, atrocious dialogue, over the top special effects, scenes that look like music videos, etc. I was only wrong about some of those things.

Actually, I experienced one of the most delightful occurrences that any avid moviegoer gets to experience — expecting a movie to suck and it doesn’t. I left the theater satisfied and ecstatic that I got every penny of my money’s worth.

There’s not much to say about the story.  Alice finds herself searching for an uninfected promised land, Arcadia, and hoping to take down the evil umbrella corporation, which is responsible for the infection. Then, she encounters a bunch of uglies (my word for the undead) and then gets right down to business. These nasty suckers are fairly easy to kill or Alice is just really good at it, because she makes art of destroying the undead. She butchers them with knives, sticks shotguns in their mouths, , and uses her sweet karate moves to kick the dead daylights out of them.

Along the way, Alice meets a couple of buddies who help her do her dirty deeds. Claire (Ali Larter) has a bad case of amnesia, Chris (Wentworth Miller) might not be the most trustworthy guy, and Luther (Boris Kodjoe) was a professional athlete before the world imploded with the undead.

As far as action movies go, this one pulls out all the stops. It is one brilliant action sequence after another. It takes a little bit to get going, but once it does, it’s one hell of a ride. For pure, fun, entertainment that kicks so hard it just might knock you off of your seat, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another as good as this.
