Local artists DJ Laz, DJ Luga and DJ Cato K will perform alongside Radio X’s DJ Baelfire at the third annual Shark Jam concert on March 22 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
The DJs will play a variety of music genres, including reggae, hip-hop, Latin, electronic dance music and much more. Attendees can expect a night of popular music, dancing, refreshments and a chance to receive free giveaways that include iPad minis and gift cards.
Christina Rajkumar, assistant director for special events and projects in the Office of Student Activities, said, “Shark Jam creates a memorable experience for NSU Sharks.”
According to Rajkumar, NSU decided to change its approach to Shark Jam this year by asking students for suggestions on programming.
“After meeting with multiple students and student groups, they expressed a preference of trying to reach a larger variety of musical genres in order to satisfy and engage our diverse student population here at NSU,” Rajkumar said, “So, we decided to host a party featuring a number of DJs, rather than a concert.”
Mikaela English, freshman biology major, said she has been hearing students talk about how excited they are for the event.
“Having a wide range of DJs preform is a great idea.” English said, “It gives everyone a chance to listen to the specific style they enjoy. From all the talk I’ve been hearing, I can’t wait to go.”
DJ Laz, was a staple of Power 96 for 22 years, up until April 2012, as the host of the “DJ Laz Morning Show.” The Cuban-American rapper has released eight studio albums, two of which appeared on U.S. Billboard album charts. His weekeday morning show now streams from Miami and Los Angeles.
DJ Luga plays and produces urban music, hip-hop and soul. He recently won the Niche V.I.P. DJ competition, one of the biggest urban music podcasts in the U.K. Luga is also the founder of Funky Bubblers Entertainment, a company that creates mixtapes series.
DJ Cato K began his career in 2005 preforming in night clubs and has recently started writing and producing his own music. Cato K is known for playing a range of dance, hip-hop, and house music.
Salvatore Mitrano, also known as DJ Baelfire, is sophomore software engineering major. Baelfire has been interested in music his entire life and has performed many times for large crowds in Italy, where he is from. He typically plays electronic music, progressive house and electronic house, all with added vocals.
“I love to put a lot of vocals in my sets because it gives emotion and memorable moments,” he said.
Baelfire said he is very excited and nervous for the concert.
“I am the first DJ to perform at Shark Jam; it is my job to get everyone on their feet and to the dance floor, which is sometimes the hardest part.”
Students, faculty and staff can attend the free event by showing their Shark Cards and state identification cards at the door. Guests can attend for $5, if they are accompanied by an NSU student and bring a valid state identification card.
For students who have never been to Shark Jam, Rajkumar tells them, “You do not want to miss this event!”
