Do you want to get into the spirit of Halloween by decorating your residence hall, but don’t know where to start? Lots of decorations can be made from everyday items. No one wants to spend money on decorations that will only be used for one month. Gather your roommates, some construction paper, tape and scissors and get crafty.
Milk jug jack-o-lanterns
Creating a real jack-o-lantern in a residence hall room can be a bit tricky, not to mention messy, but milk container ghosts create a great Halloween atmosphere. First, find an empty gallon of milk. Take a Sharpie and draw a face on either side of the container. You can make the faces scary, friendly or funny; get creative. Leave the cap on the jug while you draw to avoid dents. Then, cut a small hole in the back (the opposite end of the jug from where you drew the face). This hole should be about the size of a half dollar coin. Finally, gather some string holiday lights. Place the lights into the hole, and your ghost will begin to glow.
Creepy eyes
Constantly finding that you have empty rolls of toilet paper lying around the bathroom? Take a few of those empty rolls and put them to use. Cut holes in the rolls to create eyes. Then, in a glow stick and duct tape the sides. You will have creepy eyes all over your room when the lights are out.
Creepy spiders
In addition to decorating inside your residence hall, there are different ideas for the outside of your door as well. Fake spiders and spider webs are always a good combination. You may need to purchase these items at a local store, but they are relatively cheap and look awesome. Place some of the fake webs on the outside of your door and place small, plastic, black spiders into the web. It will make your room creepy because let’s face it: everyone’s a little scared of spiders.
Lollipop ghosts
A yummy treat for your guests or your roommates is a lollipop ghost. You will need a Blow Pop or Tootsie Pop, a tissue, a Sharpie and a rubber band. Draw a face onto the tissue, place it around the lollipop and use a rubber band to place it on top. It looks awesome and tastes good too. Place the pops into a Halloween themed jar or bucket, and hand them out.
Spooky glow
Another idea to finish the look is to get colored string lights. Use orange, purple, green or black lights to light up the room with a ghoulish glow.
Remember, we are all college students and money is tight, but with these simple ideas, you can turn your room into a Halloween horror house.
