As part of the Wellness Wednesday series, NSU Recreation and Wellness was joined by Whole Foods to promote a healthy lifestyle to NSU students on Sept. 30 at Leo Goodwin Residence Hall.
Whole Foods donated ingredients including avocado toast and Greek yogurt parfaits for students to make their own snacks. RecWell decided to host this Wellness Wednesday at Goodwin to help promote healthy eating in the residence halls and to show students healthy and delicious recipes that are easy to make.
Marcela Sandigo, associate director of programs at RecWell, said that between 35 and 40 students attended the event. Whole Foods representatives and NSU students helped host the event. Volunteers included Whole Foods Marketing Team Director Diandra Salcedo, second-year graduate student Asanyea Golding, junior Laura Vergara and first-year graduate student Lauren Iovino.
The volunteers provided demos of how to make avocado toast and Greek yogurt parfait and then the students were able to create their own. For the avocado toast, students received whole wheat bread with avocado and individuals had the option of adding turkey breast, tomatoes and cucumbers. Low-fat Greek yogurt was provided and included the optional toppings of fresh berries, gluten-free granola, nuts, honey, chia sees and dried banana chips.
Wellness Wednesday happens every week in different locations at different times. The next will be on Oct. 7 in the Don Taft University Center Spine from noon to 1 p.m.
Every first Wednesday of the month RecWell hosts a Wellness Bash. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, the theme of the event will be Pink It Out. They will be giving away healthy snacks, shirts, and other giveaways. Various student organizations will participate and the student medical center’s physician will provide education in breast cancer awareness.
