The NSU Student Events and Activities (SEA) Board will host their annual Glow in the Shark party on Oct. 29 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. in Flight Deck’s backyard.
Ashley Tomlinson, sophomore psychology major and entertainment chair of SEA Board, is spearheading the event and said her goal for the event is for NSU students to come together and celebrate Halloween as a student body.
“The Glow in the Shark party is NSU’s version of a Halloween party; it’s for students who want to come out and have fun,” she said. “A lot of students live on campus, so having a Halloween party here will be easier for them.”
There is no dress code, but students should wear costumes or white clothes to reflect black lights so that they can glow in the dark. Decorations will embrace the spirit of the holiday, and some of which will glow in the dark.
“The Glow in the Shark party is not a Halloween haunted house, but it should have a Halloween vibe, so there will be eyes staring at students in the bushes and scary skeletons, but nothing extreme,” said Tomlinson.
Tomlinson said that this year’s event will differ from any other Glow in the Shark party because the DJ from Radio X will play as much Dancehall and Soca music — Caribbean genres of music — as possible. This will differ from the party’s traditional hip-hop and pop music.
Tomlinson said that the difference in music will promote dancing among the students, and bring elements of the Caribbean to the Halloween-themed party.
“I don’t want this party to be labeled a ‘dance’ party, but we want people to dance as much as possible,” she said. “With Dancehall and Soca music, that’s what happens — it makes you want to dance.”
Tomlinson is focused on making this the best Glow in the Shark party thus far and said she hopes to expand and improve the party even more.
“I don’t want people just standing around; I want them to dance and the party to be full of energy,” said Tomlinson. “If the change in music works out in our favor, and the party is a huge success, then next year, we’ll build on that. But for right now, the focus is on this year’s party.”
The Glow in the Shark party is free for NSU students. Shark Cards are required to enter. Free food and candy will be provided.
“Even if you’re not a huge fan of Halloween, and you don’t live on campus, you can come out to party with your friends,” said Tomlinson
