Freshman Ask is a section dedicated to answering the questions that run through every freshman’s head. The questions are answered by Schae Maynard, junior environmental science major. Maynard is from Trinidad and Tobago and this is her second year as an Orientation Coordinator at NSU. Stay tuned to see what questions your fellow freshman are asking and how you can make the most of your time during your undergraduate years. If you have any questions or want more information, stop by the Office of Orientation on the first floor of the Student Affairs Building, room 106.
Q: There is always so much happening on campus. But what are the best events to go to here at NSU? Kathleen, Florida.
A: Hi Kathleen! That’s a great question. On any given day there is so many different events happening and sometimes that can be a bit intimidating. So here are some suggestions of things to lookout for in the upcoming weeks.
1/ Homecoming week: Ah, Homecoming! A time for all us Sharks to show off our pride during a power-packed week of activities. From Flight Deck Follies to the Homecoming Volleyball game, there are so many chances to win cool giveaways and up your NSU swag game while supporting your school. The fun doesn’t stop there, get those party shoes ready because the Homecoming Bash is coming! Tickets are only $10 and trust me when I say you won’t be disappointed. If you haven’t gotten a chance to grab your ticket for the most epic party of the semester, then be sure to head to the Office of Student Activities and pick up your tickets before they are all gone.
2/ Sporting events: Who doesn’t love getting free access to the amazing world of sports? Thanks to your Shark Card, you have free access into all NSU athletic games. Well if you fancy getting hyped and cheering your team to victory as much as I do, then you, my friend, should check out some of our NSU sporting events. As a Division II school, we slay the competition in a wide range of sports including, but not limited to: soccer, golf, basketball, volleyball, tennis, swimming and track and field. Lookout for the next sporting event and be sure to stop by and support Sharks athletics.
3/ Greek life: Our sororities and fraternities do so much for the NSU community. Their events are always poppin’ and there’s a little bit of something for everyone. From probates to barbecues to game shows and other fundraising events, our Greeks put in a lot of time and effort to raise awareness for various causes in fun and exciting ways. Even if you do not have any interest in joining a Greek organization here on campus, you can always take a few minutes to check out what’s happening and support a good cause.
4/ S.E.A Thursday: As I’m sure many of your out there know, S.E.A Thursday is all about going big or going home. This bi-weekly event takes over the UC spine and is a great chance to learn more about NSU clubs and organizations. You can stop in and grab some food before heading off to your 1 p.m. class. Radio X keeps it pumping by blasting out some of today’s best music hits to keep the party going. If you haven’t gotten a chance to check out past S.E.A Thursdays, try and drop by this week and if you stick around long enough, you might even get to see some of our Greeks stroll.
5/ Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) events: Break out those jazz hands and head over to the performance theatre. Each semester the PVA department puts on various shows which feature current NSU students. So if you are looking for something new to do with your weekends, be sure to look out for upcoming PVA performances.
Shark Pro Tip: Looking for a way to get more SERV hours? Be sure to check out the next SAS trip or Day of Service. Stop by the SLCE table at S.E.A Thursday for more information.
Well that’s all I got for you this week. I hope these suggestions will help you make the most of your experience here at NSU. Be sure to let us know how you like some of these events and which are your favorites.
