Stepping into the adult world after graduation is a stressful thought for any college senior. To help ease this transition, the Office of Advancement is launching Life After NSU, a series of three presentations, to introduce students to the Alumni Association and provide them with skills for life after graduation.
The presentations will focus on money management, making a good impression and staying connected to peers and will be hosted on March 29, April 5 and April 13, respectively. All sessions are open to NSU students and will include a free lunch for those who RSVP.
There will also be a celebratory “Shark Fest” at Dave & Busters on April 16 to celebrate graduating students.
RJ Stamper, director of alumni relations, said that the Alumni Association created the series to introduce students to the association.
“We want to make sure that our graduates know just because you’re no longer on campus attending classes, there are still opportunities to be involved with the university,” he said. “Once you’ve left, you’re still a Shark; you’re still a part of the NSU community.”
He also said that the association wants to provide students with skills to prepare them for life after graduation, and the seminar topics were chosen specifically to educate students on what to do after they are accepted into a post-grad job.
Even though the presentations are aimed toward graduating seniors, Stamper said that students of any year can apply the lessons to their lives.
“These topics are something you’ll use after NSU, but also something you’ll use during your college career,” he said. “We want to make sure that everyone has access to the information. Whether you’re talking about branding yourself in a personal environment [or something else], it’s never too early to start setting yourself apart professionally.”
In the past, Alumni Relations focused on how alumni interact with each other in outside activities, but Stamper said that now the association wants to focus on students before they leave NSU to prepare them for post-grad life and give them a head start in being involved in the association.
As of 2015, there are approximately 77,000 NSU alumni, and Stamper said that this is the largest constituency of NSU.
