Meet employers at the Career Expo

It’s difficult to find out if you’re up for the job if you’re sitting in class all day.

Students will meet with employers offering full-time and internship positions at the Career Expo, hosted by the Office of Career Development, on March 30 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Arena at the Don Taft University Center.

Representatives from Aflac, City Furniture, JM Family Enterprises, Ross Stores, Liberty Settlement Funding, Wyndham Vacation Ownership, the Monroe County School District, Tracfone Wireless, the Peace Corps and Modernizing Medicine will attend the expo.

Career Development will also set up a station at the expo where students can research employers, practice questions to ask employers and learn about the do’s and don’ts of professional conversation.

Emilio Lorenzo, assistant director of Career Advisement, said that 80 percent of jobs are obtained through networking.

“It’s important to put a face to the name on the application,” Lorenzo said. “You have a chance to make yourself a human cover letter. You’ll be able to talk to this employer about your passion, your interests, why you want to work for them, and why your experience is relevant to them.”

Annie Uzar, coordinator of Career Development, said that employers are looking for well-rounded students.

“Often, students will ask about what kinds of majors employers are recruiting, and employers will ask what students are majoring in, but it doesn’t matter,” she said. “Employers are looking for all kinds of majors. They want a well-rounded student who is responsible, can communicate, and will hit the ground running.”

Lorenzo said that employers are also looking for passion in candidates.

“Being able to sell yourself, your passion and your excitement helps them to buy into you as an individual,” he said.

Uzar said that the expo will help students who are undecided about their major figure out what they want to do and that it will be beneficial for freshman students, even if they aren’t looking for jobs yet.

“You can start making connections,” she said. “It’s never too early to start networking. You want to make sure that you have the confidence to talk to people when you’re ready to start looking for career opportunities.”

Uzar said she hopes the Career Expo will build students’ confidence.

“I want students to be able to sell themselves as wonderful NSU students who are capable of entering the workforce at any given time in their desired field,” she said.

Computer science and technology majors can also attend the Computer Science Sneak Peek, where they will be able to meet with employers in their field. There will also be a session, conducted by the Department of Labor, where students can learn about financial awareness. Both events will be on the day of the expo at 4 p.m. at the Don Taft University Center. Students can sign up on CareerShark.

Professional attire is required for admittance to the expo. Medical students can wear scrubs.
