Influential women in film

In the film industry, the divide between genders in terms of representation behind the scenes is substantial. In top grossing films since 2009, only 21 percent of producers have been female, only 13 percent of writers have been female and only 4 percent of directors have been female, according to The Washington Post. However, there are still many notable women making waves in Hollywood writing, producing and directing.

Ava DuVernay
DuVernay currently has one film she directed in theaters, “A Wrinkle in Time.” She’s also made a name for herself by winning the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for her piece on incarceration in America, “13th”.

Meg LaFauve
LaFauve has worked recently with Disney, writing animated features like “Inside Out” and
“The Good Dinosaur.”  “Inside Out” was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Original
Screenplay as well as the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Greta Gerwig
In the most recent Academy Awards, Gerwig was the only female nominee in the
category of Best Director. She, along with directing and producing films, also acts. Her
next film will be “Isle of Dogs,” directed by Wes Anderson.

Patty Jenkins
Jenkins directed “Wonder Woman,” starring Gal Gadot. While she did not write the film,
due to the high critical acclaim of Wonder Woman, Jenkins will be writing the sequel,
which is set to be released in 2019.

Rachel Morrison
Morrison has been working as a cinematographer and camera operator since 1999, and
recently worked with Netflix for the original film “Mudbound.” She was the first woman
ever nominated for Best Cinematography by the Academy at the 90th Academy Awards.
