Tanner Petulla, known by his stage name Getter, is a jack of all trades within the industry. He is an electronic music producer, a rapper (Terror Reid), an owner of a clothing line (Trippy Burger), a Twitch streamer, as well as the owner of his own music label/collective called Shred Collective. On Sept. 28, Getter released his long awaited full-length album “Visceral”.
“Visceral”, as explained by Getter in an interview with thissongissick, is his coping mechanism and also a diary of sorts. The album title itself speaks to this as “visceral” relates to feelings that are so deep-rooted that they’re hard to control and deal with. Prior to the release of this album, Getter explained how important this album is to him and how important it’s been in his process of coping with his depression and anxiety. Through honest lyrics and emotional melodies, Getter makes it a point in each track to open up just a little bit more. Each melody, each drop, each sample is all thought out so intricately to create an album that hits home in one way or another to everyone who listens. It feels almost as if, while going through a full listen of “Visceral”, you are living vicariously through his beats and feeling his every emotion. Not only is this album important to Getter emotionally, it is the first release he’s made solely for himself and not just for the “hype”. It’s totally different from anything he’s ever released, and I’m here for it.
The opening track, “Purgatory” is an build into the album that includes many musical themes from the following tracks within “Visceral”. It sounds like a track from a video game that might indicate a dream sequence. It’s creepy but whimsical in a way that keeps you wanting more.
The fourth track on the album, “All is Lost”, is the track that stands out the most to me on the album. “All is Lost” features nothing, nowhere,an indie rock and emo vocalist who is a perfect fit for this song in particular. The song is about feeling like everything around you is falling apart and going through a rough time. The song itself is beautifully produced and sounds like a combination of future bass and trap with faster paced drums in the background and hints of chimes and birds chirping here and there. It builds pretty slowly to the drop, but it’s totally worth the wait.
This feature-heavy album includes features and collaborations from AudioOpera, Allan Kingdom, nothing, nowhere., Sweetsound, Midoca, Name UL, NJOMZA, Party Nails and Joji. Though nine songs out of the 12-track LP have features, it is not heavily reliant on the features like a lot of feature-heavy albums. Rather than taking away from the quality of the songs, the seemingly perfect-fit features each add a new layer to each song helping to emphasize the deep-seated emotion in each song.
“Visceral” was a project that Getter worked on over a span of three years, and it definitely shows. It’s an album comprised of songs that can stand out on their own as well as fit perfectly together in one unit. It’s amazing how much more meaningful and beautiful a project can be when you know the artist poured their heart and soul into it.
