How to adapt to college life like a PRO as an international student

Sourced: Skylyr VanDerveer

Being an international student, it can be hard to adjust, I know. The cultural shock may be hard, and you feel as if you are all alone. Trust me, I’ve been in that situation but don’t worry these tips and tricks will help you succeed! I know they did for me!

  1. Always carry something that reminds you of home. A picture, a necklace, a perfume anything

works. This will make you feel as if you’re always home. See it as a reminder, if you ever feel

homesick you will always have that one thing that will remind you of where you came from.

  1. Be open minded and go to all the events on campus. It might seem intimidating at first but

breaking out of your comfort zone will make you feel empowered and confident to meet new

People.

  1. Remember, you are not the only one going through this phase. Talk to other international

students and make them feel included. Who knows? Maybe you can make a great group of

Friends!

  1. Join clubs! They’re a great way to meet new people and learn new things along the way. You find people with the same interests, and there will always be a conversation!

  1. Breathe. It’s okay to take a day for yourself and relax. Do a spa day, go out and see a movie, or even shopping. This will clear your mind and distract you if you feel overwhelmed.

  1. Get to know the area! Go off campus and find cute and relaxing places such as coffee shops,

libraries, shopping malls and restaurants. You can even take your new friends to a nice restaurant and have a nice meal.

  1. Netflix it! Have nothing else to do? Or just very bored? Binge watch International TV shows and learn how to say a few words in other languages. This can spark a conversation with another international student, about the show or even about the words you learned to say!

It can be hard at first, I know but trust me it’s okay to feel the way you do and if anytime you feel the need to talk to someone, feel free to do so. Don’t feel embarrassed or scared, that’s why there’s the International Office of Affairs located on the main campus, always available for the students. There are other resources on campus just like Counselling Services, that will also help you through your big change coming into college! Go sharks!
